Functioning

IMHOFF tanks consist of a single tank in which the sedimentation zone (middle zone of the tank) and the decanted solids digestion zone (lower zone of the tank) are differentiated.

Through primary sedimentation, the heaviest solids are separated by difference in density. With the help of the force of gravity, these remains are deposited in the lower part of the tank forming a sludge blanket where biological activity is carried out through the action of anaerobic bacteria.

The “bell” that communicates both zones prevents the passage of gases and mud particles from the digestion zone to the decantation zone, thus preventing the gases generated in the digestion from affecting the sedimentation of the solids.
